At that time, Sariputra, empowered by the Buddha's majesty had this thought: If a Bodhisattva's heart being pure leads to a Buddha land being pure, when our Baghavan was previously a Bodhisattva, could his thoughts not have been impure? And therefore this Buddha land is so impure as this?
The Buddha, knowing his thoughts, then addressed him, saying: What do you think? Could the sun and moon not be impure? And therefore those who are blind do not see them?
He answered: Not so, Baghavan. This is the fault of the blind, and not a flaw in the sun and moon.
Sariputra, the many beings are sinful, and therefore do not see the pure adornment of the Tathagata's Buddha land. It is no fault of the Tathagata.
Sariputra, this land of mine is pure, and you do not perceive it.
At that time the Brahma king Śikhin spoke to Sariputra: Have not this thought, saying that you find this Buddha land impure. Why is this? I see the purity of the Buddha Sakyamuni's Buddha land, as if it were a palace in the Vasavartin heavens.
Sariputra spoke: I see this land's hills and pits, its thorns and rubble, its earth and stone and many mountains, and all unclean wickedness filling it.
Brahma Śikhin spoke: Your mind has also its highs and lows, and it is only because you do not dwell in the Buddha's wisdom that you see this land as impure.
Sariputra, a Bodhisattva is towards all beings impartial, with the depths of his mind pure; dwelling in the Buddha's wisdom, he then is able to see this Buddha land as pure.
