>CMU officials said preliminary enrollment numbers showed 14,411 students are attending the Mount Pleasant-based institution’s classes this fall.
>The last time CMU’s student population was smaller: 1973, when enrollment was 14,270.
>The decline this semester marked the eighth consecutive year the university experienced a decrease in students. CMU hit its all-time enrollment peak in 2015, when 25,528 students attended classes there.
Central used to be a party school but some academics hated that so they cleaned things up and now the students are going elsewhere. Don't necessarily disagree with the academics as getting teens to go deep into debt to have a four (or more) year party is a moral hazard. Nevertheless, the school is clearly in decline. Maybe they'll plateau with a student body that's mainly there to earn a degree first and party second.
