Henry Lucas has been widely discounted as a fantasist, enabled by 'satanic panic' and unscrupulous law enforcement agencies. This was the narrative promoted by Netflix's disinformational series, "The Confession Killer" - starring Hugh Aynesworth of the Dallas Morning News, a CIA asset (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTaz95ni22E) who was instrumental in discrediting Lucas' story and obtained his recantation.

Lucas told others the Hand of Death cult was forcing him to recant, implying that Aynesworth was connected with it. This is not as outlandish as it might sound.

The New Orleans D.A.'s Office faced an unprecedented assault by local and national media for its independent probe of the Kennedy murder, which led to the indictment of Clay Shaw (https://www.kennedysandking.com/john-f-kennedy-articles/shoot-him-down-nbc-the-cia-and-jim-garrison).

Among the principal figures in this assault was Hugh Aynesworth. Author Jim DiEugenio writes, "With the work of the Assassination Records Review Board, many more pages of documents have been released showing how tightly bound Aynesworth was with the intelligence community. It has been demonstrated that Aynesworth was - at the minimum - working with the Dallas Police, Shaw's defense team, and the FBI. He was also an informant to the White House, and had once applied for work with the CIA." (https://spartacus-educational.com/JFKaynesworth.htm) In one instance, Aynesworth is reported to have attempted to bribe state's witness John Manchester - a Clinton, LA police officer who would testify that he'd seen Shaw, Ferrie, and Oswald together at a voters' registration drive - offering him employment with CIA (!) in, of all places, Mexico. "I advise you to leave the area," Manchester replied, "Otherwise, I'll cut you a new asshole!".
