Steel from a Dying Empire
October 13, 2021

Twelve American destroyers and six submarines permanently join Nippon's Maritime Self-Defense Force, based out of Chugoku. The sale went through in the days following the outbreak hostilities in the Second American Civil War. The U.S. Naval Command, operating rogue, agreed to the sale to fund the rest of its command force. Approximately $150 billion for the eighteen ships. Given that the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers cost around $2.2 billion to produce, the U.S. Naval Command considers the deal worthwhile, and Nippon considers it necessary given her isolation. As of 2020, Shina's naval fleet exceeded the U.S. in terms of outright size, with a battle force of over 370.

Importantly, the destroyers carry with them the Aegis combat system. Developed in the 1960s-70s, the Aegis is an American integrated naval weapons system, which uses computers and radars to track and guide weapons to destroy enemy targets. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyers hold one vertical launch missile system, one navy artillery gun, and two CIWS anti-air systems.

The newly-acquired ships boost Nippon's fleet capabilities by a significant amount. Whether it is enough to withstand a Shina invasion force, however, remains to be seen.
