At least 90% of Ruby's baggage is related to the association between physical violence and being male, or at least his changing perceptions of those 2 things. So even if Sapphire wasn't in the picture, Ruby hitting anybody at all on purpose would be so out of character that it probably isn't even Ruby. Minus the time he kind of tried to kill his dad, but that's a special one off case you could interpret as Ruby trying to destroy the primary remaining symbol of masculinity in his life in a confused emotional fit, thinking it'd solve both their estranged relationship and Ruby's angsty self hatred of his biological sex (it wouldn't have helped at all)

Besides he can always just bury his face in Sapphire's butt and hug it if he wants to enjoy it that much.
