This artist seems to be a newer Pokespe fan, they mentioned on Twitter once about only reading Pokespe/only catching up with it in 2023/2024 or something unless Google Translate tricked me again. But I think not having the past experience of waiting out the torturous 2008-2014 gap between the Emerald and ORAS arcs/the slow drip of ORAS magazine chapter releases in real time (only to realize it's terrible) actually gives them a better perspective of what the actual ideas were behind Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. Because being able to just read through nearly all the canon material in one shot just makes things clearer. Leading to the rare artist who can both draw well but also bothers trying to keep everyone in character, a task only made more difficult by needing to read/endure ORAS more than once just to figure out what was going on in there. A task which a lot of older fans are either too bitter or just too over it all to even try.

I will come off like a /pol/fag for continuously bringing this up but I do it because it's relevant. In 2013 the DSM-5 (an American manual for mental illnesses, which the rest of the world either decides to mimic or not) changed the terminology for "gender identity disorder" to "gender dysphoria". They dropped the word "disorder" to "remove stigma" from trannies, likely due to activist pressure. This single event seems to have opened Pandora's box as a lot of "cultural changes" in the west started around 2013 and the early 2010s in general. For example in terms of contemporary entertainment media popular with impressionable children and /vp/edos, the Steven Universe pilot (2013) and Undertale (2015) came out around this time, packaged with layered "messaging". Perhaps to help erase "stigma" from tranny ideas. The death of Pokespe's RS arc discussion in online Anglo circles began around this time too, though I saw shades of it some months/years earlier I just attributed it to a couple mentally ill individuals.

In the beginning, early 2010s when a strange amount of people around me (physically, not even online) started turning out to be gays or trannies, it was weird but I saw no reason to treat them differently since it's not like they were unpleasant people or trying to convert me into anything. It's a delusion of modern time that made this entire mess possible. People believe they are something special, because they are told they have a super power called dignity. If you think about it, then you'll realize that dignity has no real value in itself, other than justifying protection of human life from tyranny (which, after the horrors of WW2, was necessary to establish). Move outside the human species, and you'll realize that animals don't have the same protection, in fact, they're usually treated like commodities (= like shit). And all this gets naturally blamed on Ruby, both in universe and outside of it, just like in ORAS later on. But in reality the exact moment RS goes to shit is the moment Sapphire doesn't break the aircar glass in one punch. That's the main contradiction with prior events (back when she could break concrete), since there's no logical reason why she can't break out herself, it's not like Ruby broke her fucking arms. And contrary to what everyone keeps spamming, the fact Ruby locked her in there in the first place is NOT the main problem narratively at least in terms of his character arc: the whole point is that he comes to care for Sapphire so much that he goes insane. He then makes a morally ambiguous/stupid choice that he quickly faces consequences for (even if some think he deserved even more bullying for it, though frankly watching his dad's fresh corpse get cremated was already punishment enough). But in terms of Ruby's development alone, it's the culmination of his entire journey, going from a selfish brand of mental illness to a "selfless" brand of mental illness (but still selfish in a different way). Because even when he technically becomes a better person, he still doesn't know how to be "normal". Thinking that he's loving Sapphire by betraying her is meant to be the epitome of his brain rot.

But the RS arc might have been running out of time or something by that point because while Ruby undergoes his 20th mental breakdown, Sapphire just ends up shafted in the process of it all.

That's what I mean when shounen genre conventions get suddenly enforced on RS out of nowhere. Early-middle RS style writing would have let Sapphire do something there, because that's why she exists, she fills in the blanks where Ruby is incapable and vice versa, they are complementary. At least they would be complementary in a story that gives a shit about sticking to its themes from start to finish.

But the story stopped caring as much near the ending, which is random. Maybe Kusaka got bored of writing RS and phoned it in the final 10 chapters of a 100+ chapter manga for the lols. Or you could also consider executive meddling as an explanation. Between terrible deadlines and some suited fossil who insists only the single male MC should be allowed to do anything significant during the climax, even if it doesn't any make sense in context of a story with two fucking MCs, I believe Kusaka didn't have a choice but to capitulate to the boss. That's just my headcanon of course, who knows what actually went on over there.
