The proper word should be "since".
Each generation has more mutations than the previous one - and don't even try to debate this. It's been discovered decades ago, and it's an undeniable fact.

Now, if you apply logic to this - if each generation has more gene copying mistakes (mutations), there must've been point 0, where it all started.
