I do believe a new display server protocol for unix would be awesome but many of the design choices thrust upon us by the governing body (LOL) managing the project has completely ruined its potential as an Xorg successor. Arcan is probably the most well known of these. There is even really out there distro Eltanin OS which ships with it

Nano-X looks sick, its tiny enough to run on PDAs from the 2000s, surprised nobody seems interested in running it on a desktop

I don't know how the fuck drawterm works but some plan9 cultist could probably fill us in on that, I also saw this one called mds from one of the suckless guys but that seemed to just be a toy project.
