I think I'd be more receptive to the 3D models if the lighting didn't look so plastic and cheap. It's not horrible looking, at least, the models for most of the character themselves feel pretty accurate to how they looked in art format, minus the outlining.
I think the biggest issue stylistically happens with Kuchizoku characters like Kuchipatchi, Yattatchi and Sebiretchi, where the lips blend into the model due to the lighting or look out of place since their designs inherently rely on cheated angles that only work in 2D format.
That said, characters like Kuchipatchi always had it rough design-wise over time. Kenji Watanabe's original artwork for him focused on giving him a unique silhouette so he's easily identifiable and stands out and never gave him a "forward-facing" design. Early JINCO art matched that, but also started including forward-facing art that focuses less on his silhouette before that became the default, and later v-pet entries shelved the profile view entirely (either for gene mixing or cosmetic compatibility purposes). I think the design deterioration ends up being amplified by 3D models however.
