I knew 108 is religiously significant, so I googled 49 significance and got that 49 days was one of the lengths of the intermediate state (bardo) in Buddhism. Whatever that is.

108 is sacred in Buddhism and Hinduism. In Japanese buddhism, it refers to the 108 earthly temptations a person must overcome to achieve nirvana.
