Oh yeah, if anything it was worse. I mean there was a whole documentary that came out about how the fans hated the prequels and everything George Lucas had done. A lot of old internet content's been wiped/lost but there's still some stuff up from that era.

I would say they were more divisive though cause even back then they did have their fans. Whereas with the sequels even the people who liked Force Awakens or Last Jedi (or both) will admit Rise of Skywalker is a complete fucking mess. Whereas even back in the day a lot of people who hated the first 2 prequels would admit Revenge of the Sith is alright at least
