As soon as you realize there's nothing to actually be afraid of beyond the five-ish winter lanterns (and you can easily kill those anyway), the entire thing loses its sense of tension. And with out that, like the rest of the DLC, the area is too big, too empty, but also isn't as intricately layered or worth exploring as other places. It's just a giant, empty forest that you can't even ride your spirit horse through to save time.
I hate to call for more content/gimmick reuse, but there totally should've been some sort of brain of mensis to the area. Perhaps even a mobile one. A giant, floating, flaming eye patrolling the woods, forcing you to deviate from your path to hide from its gaze. Something, at least, beside absolutely nothing. The area is the definition of bark being worse than its bite. It looks cool and the atmosphere is great, don't get me wrong, but this only heightens the disappoint of what it actually is.
The actual best area is the Ancient Ruins of Rauh. It's genuinely a place you have to learn to navigate, and has the most varied content in terms of types of areas, items, and enemies in the DLC. It's the epitome of the idea of turning the over world into a "legacy dungeon." It's not perfect, but it's way, way less boring than the Woods.
