I feel like the only time I can think of where it felt okay was Clear from Zatch Bell.
He was another case of "one villain vs the whole hero team" but at least in his case he literally branched off parts of his power into living super spells that acted as final fights for the supporting cast on the way to the fight, with only Zatch and Brago remaining when they got to the real fight.
