You are correct. Bartleby is an archetypal Mary Sue. A writer's pet that can do no wrong and for whom the story bends over backwards to make sure they never fail or lose.
When it comes to pitting him against others characters inside the story, victory for the other party is a complete impossibility.
That's right. So long as they are confined by the story, by the script, they cannot win. But then again... we do know someone who isn't confined by the script, don't we?
