I tend to agree with the anon above about Trump boxing himself in with ladybugs 500% bonecrushing sanctions against some of the most populous and fast growing economies in the world. He had to make it appear like he was making progress with the Russians. He sent Witkoff to Russia to promise Putin the moon and the stars to get him to the table and is now lying, walking back, and planting media spin stories to make it appear that the Russians are begging to capitulate.
I kinda understand Putin playing along as Biden and the Europeans have been completely ignoring him up to now and this summit goes someway towards re-establishing diplomatic channels. Were outright refusal may damage any hope of future rapproachment.
