You are more than open to actually give a proper response explaining how, or why... but I have a feeling you're just one of those losers that isn't actually going to formulate a response because you're a limp-wristed pussy even on an anonymous imageboard where just 10 years ago everybody was "6 feet tall, jacked and tanned IRL."

>How do I fix it
Realize that friends actually will care about a lot of stupid small shit, ask them small random questions like how they feel about a certain movie, series, genre. Understand their interests, inquire about things in that interest. I.E "Oh you like this? Do you have a favorite character? What makes them your favorite?" From there you can actually get a pretty decent conversation going about personalities or attributes and similar characters.
I don't know how to describe this in a way that makes sense to people here but small talk is like the "negative rep" (weightlifting) in socializing. A lot of people take it for granted because they obsess over the rep, but lose out on potential gains by just letting the bar fall down instead of controlling the bar and lowering it slowly to resting. Get what I mean in how that works with conversation?
Would reply more but this is already at 1200. T_T

>Going to someone just to talk about yourself isn't a good look...
Doesn't have to be to talk about yourself. Ask how they're doing, what they're up to, respond based on what they say unless it's literally a closed ended response like "Fine." "Hey, how are you? How's the morning?"
My comment wasn't people who don't talk about themselves, it's people who literally don't respond AT ALL because they think their response isn't important or isn't big enough to matter so they don't bother saying it period which yes, does in fact look worse.
