Japanese elementary schools run for 6 years. First years are typically 6 years old and will turn 7 over the course of the school year. Sixth years will typically start the school year at 11 and turn 12 over the course of the year. Japanese middle schools and high schools both run for three years each, with the numbering resetting (unlike the US system which counts all twelve years as Grades 1-12). Typical first year middle schoolers start as 12 year old and finish as 13 year olds, and typical third year middle schoolers start as 14 year olds and finish as 15 year olds. Typical first year high schoolers start as 15 year olds and finish as 16 year olds, and typical third year high schoolers start as 17 year olds and finish as 18 year olds. Even if a Japanese work is not set in modern Japan, this is the mindset that Japanese creators are working from, so it's pretty useful knowledge to have if consuming any of their content.
