What matters are Denji's intentions. He didn't have good intentions during those moments. Fujimoto is absolutely casting him in a negative light over it. Not as a "villain" but as a very flawed individual who is more and more often being referred to as a "devil" rather than human.
The "punishment" can be seen all over his body language, his confidence from earlier P2 has been shattered.
