Well, it could be a Merikiki fantasy and if nothing else, Kiki does also have a bevy of water types. But, adrenaline is one hell of a drug, and Kieran does lock in in times of direness: See my favourite moment of Pokemon ever during the Stellar Terapagos fight.
In spite of, or perhaps, precisely because he's a slacker, I get the feeling that Drayton's the sort of 'lazy ace' archetype, effortlessly good at everything.
And that's especially why he'd show up, because I'd only be pretending to drown, and the rules of comedy dictate that'd be the funniest thing to happen.
