The UK just has insane alcohol taxes. In most Slavic countries beer is as cheap as water and vodka not much more, while German Lidl has cans of beer for like 30 eurcents. I remember reading somewhere that even slaves in the Roman Empire would have multiple litres of wine per week, and yeah I can see that because we've got a grapevine here in a northern European climate no less and about 3 or 4 metres of it across a fence makes enough wine to last us a year basically for free. Basically, what we call "alcoholism" was the natural state of humanity for all of our recorded history and WE are the weird ones for taxing the shit out of it.
