With all this talk about prices and beers being too expensive it’s gotten me wondering how expensive alcohol should be, as in the objective economic value. People say to go to liquor stores ‘cause their cheaper than bars, let’s see how far things go. You buy a beer at the liquor store, sold by a company. In some areas the company has a monopoly, or cartel etc so they can set the price way above the actual value. Then, many governments will tax the beer to financially discourage people from becoming alcoholics. If you buy from a bar, the bar charges you more ‘cause they at least gotta pay the bartenders and bouncers, and you still have greed after that.

I found this site claiming that beer was dirt cheap in Victorian England, though it doesn’t look particularly reliable:

The primary reason I go to bars (on rare occasions, but sometimes I do) is for mixed drinks involving multiple liquors. If I want a Negroni at home, I either have to spend $60 on gin and liqueurs or put up with an inferior premixed version. Spending $10-15 for a well made drink on a special occasion is cheaper, and means I don't have to trust my own mixology skills.

I was fucking shocked the last time I was in LA for a convention, got one old fashioned with Makers' at the hotel bar and it cost more than a whole bottle of Makers at a store. Weird thing is that the same bar had been reasonable pre-covid too, more like $11 (which yeah is a lot compared to a dive bar but it's a fancy downtown LA hotel), and managed to more than double in price in like 4 years.

I've traveled a lot (mostly work) so I've spent plenty of time going to bars by myself, just because nursing a beer at one is better than twiddling my thumbs in a hotel room. Whether it leads to socialization is pretty hit or miss, depends on the bar and what's going on in the general area - obviously if there's a convention or something the chances are way higher. Never had that much luck locally though there is one weird thing that's a fly fishing shop with a beer bar in it, that place is social as fuck but I've never seen a woman in there.

Best place I've ever gone to bars is Japan, the instant people figure out that you're a white guy who can speak enough Japanese to have a conversation with you've got a whole room of new friends and will never pay for a drink. My company's office in Japan was right around the corner from a maid bar and I used to go there all the time, the bartender girls loved me because I'd actually treat them normally and not expect any maid bullshit out of them and I've always kinda regretted not asking one of them in particular out, super cool chick around 30 who was obviously kind of a yanki in her younger years and would drift into talking like one when nobody else was around.
