Someone else said know the safety rules and I will say that again: know the safety rules. I'm just saying this even if you know it already because repetition is good and will be better for you.
Are you going to an indoor or outdoor range? There are little things first-time shooters might not know. Things to just be mentally aware of. Look at the red line on the floor in this photo, the range will probably have something like that.
If the range is "cold," don't cross that line. Never ever. If it's "hot," then people are shooting and you can cross the line and also shoot. It's more common at outdoor ranges for the range officers to call the range cold/hot because people physically walk out onto the range to set up their targets rather than having an automatic pulley system.
Try to keep your gun facing towards the target even when it's sitting on the table. So when you pull your gun out and set it on the table, keep the barrel aiming in the same direction as the target. Keep the slide locked open and facing up and with the magazine out, so when the range officer walks by and peeks over your shoulder, he sees that it's unloaded when it's just sitting there.
This sounds simple but these are good habits to pick up.
