I've had this thought in the past but find that the comparison is pretty shallow, even if they're both huge nerds that love their industry. Anno is interesting, however, and I recommend watching Aoi Honoo.
It's also funny watching Anno's live action movies and seeing him force blocking and shot composition that only works in anime, so you end up with a camera on the floor looking up at an actor between two office chairs. It's super dorky.
