They are just little guys. They have their own natures in game, and you can even have Alpha unown in PLA. I see them less like a hive mind and more like bees. They have their own form of communication and expression that is alien to humans. Their reality warping is less because they are special and more because they are so good at syncing their psychic powers together that it reaches reality warping levels. Of course, evidence suggests that Arceus may have created them this way precisely to have an easy to call upon army of reality warpers.
