Chris by description alone was pretty much a rip off or homage to Maverick from Top Gun. An air force pilot that disobeyed orders. All the while managing to move upwards despite his recklessness.

I wonder why that is too? Wasn't smoking well beyond seen as a negative habit to partake in at that time? Plus it does seem rather odd that an airforce pilot would be a smoker. They did censor it in the western release.

It has gotten too repetitive if you ask me. I mean sure with the stuff that Chris faces. There's no way an average grunt would make it out alive. But it sucks to see him fall to the depths again and again.
