The protag himself is a former glowie who was ruthlessly recycled by his handlers after a near death experience, mindwiped and rigged with an MKUltra trigger, while his dead wife's brain's hemispheres were used to create two killbots.
The grand plan of the USSR in the game was not only to take over the west by activating the robots' combat protocols and having them indiscriminately slaughter everyone until the governments surrender, but also to rope everyone including their own citizens into a neural network (Kollektiv 2.0) which had a secret kill switch that allowed the higher ups to override anyone's free will if necessary, aside from a handful of "special priority" users.

Aside from the omnipresent visual and audible slavboomer nostalgia bait, they hardly could've portrayed the Soviet union and its leadership in a worse light.
