They DID have Rare to supplement the Gamecube library. And what they supplemented it WITH after a colossal clusterfuck of a development cycle is what helped convince them not to take up Rare's buyout offer.

Seriously, everyone rightly laughs at Sony for buying out Bungie and Microsoft for Bethesda, but don't realize that Nintendo buying Rare then would have been just as embarrassing.
