This entire arc unfortunately had very little to do with the journey. To me the difference here is that the stakes and the threat feel much more prevalent.
Either Serie will die (even if it's just a clone and she wanders off into hiding) so that Frieren will have to be faced with her own mortality in a much more impactful way.
Or, the Empire's collapse will precipitate, but this would also symbolize Flamme's dream dying - which would mean that it will be up to Frieren to continue her legacy in a different way.
