I dislike Ubel because she presents a massive retcon and shift of the magic system from a knowledge and research-based system to Fairy Tail (imagination is everything). The only way to save her and what she represents is if she’s a Demon in disguise. It would be hard to explain why Frieren couldn’t sense her, but who knows maybe Serei is helping her out for some reason with cloaking magic or something. Ie, Serei doesn’t care if she’s a Demon but the humans in the Mage Association would get weird over it so Serei put some magic on her to hide it. Of course this won’t happen because it would basically force Frieren to get into a conflict with Serei and confront her over it. “Hey why are you bringing Demons into human society that’s psycho behavior” and the manga simply isn’t that written at that level. But even if it was done poorly it would save the magic system and explain why Ubel acts the way she does.

We also know that, internally, the Shadow Warriors have murdered some political magnets and royalty at various intervals since going rogue.

Yes and was shown to be quite ineffective, especially in a complex situation. Took Serie 100 years to make a spell that could only be used by one person at any one time. Frieren didn't even acknowledge it as being a viable solution, so created her own spell from scratch ( in 1/500 of the time) which could not only completely negate any effect of the curse but reserve it and was able to be shared between multiple people at the same time.

So far, only Edel actually recurred in the series not counting cameos and glorified cameos. Going the land route is supposed to be much slower than using a ship. She’s going to go for the Fairy Tail concept of the Great Magic World to usher in a world of magic across the entire land and possibly the whole planet, a world in which mages are supreme. That would make Serie and her mages’ presence in the narrative up until now make sense, to be the final barrier to Frieren reaching afterlife portal land thing beyond the the Demon King’s castle. I guess that should be joined tothe mystery of the HotS and Schlacht because it's just so odd how multiple parties seen the future but did nothing with the information. I could understand that Schlacht might have died to take doewn the HotS, even with his visions because HotS was too big of a threat. What about Grausam? Did that information, along with Schlacht's visions not make the demon king reconsider their approach? It's too suspicious that the demon king has yet to make an appearance. Is their presence so damning? Are we going to find out that demons are actually corrupted elves as a result of experimenting/using magic, or something? Would explain why there are so few (pure) elves around, it would explain why humans were so against magic (until they forgot history), and why the likes of Serie was against fighting the demon king (could be a friend or something). Frieren was probably born during the corruption so she never learned the history of her people. Do we actually know anything about Frieren's youth?

They lived in the north and something happened that made them lose their humanity as a cost for a natural mastery and understanding of magic.
