Cliches and Tropes are good, actually
and can work.
They almost always work, when they're earned.
The fact of the matter is, most stories now-a-days do not earn them, and they know they don't, so they either do them anyways as some weird post modern fuck you, or subvert them on purpose to piss fans of said tropes off.
That is how bitter a lot of western """"artists""" are.
