But life wasn't all fast women and loose cars. There were people trying to kill Jumper, and the rest of Company 8, and arguably everyone else. Except for Shinra, whom they needed alive. The junior members got into a large-scale battle when they went to recruit a talented engineer named Vulcan – which was a problem, because Jumper wasn't a direct fighter and Arthur didn't have his sword.
“We just need as much knightly stuff as possible, right?” Jumper got out his lighter, and lit it. With a flick of his finger, the flame turned blue and shot off, becoming a plasma plate on the wannabe knight. Normally the plates were hexagonal, but Jumper made them more triangular this time, layering them together to look like actual armor.
Arthur frowned, and poked at them. “This is good, but scale mail isn't really a knight thing,” he complained. “More like a... hoplite, thing.”
Jumper monkeyed with it, arranging the plates into a rectangular grid. “There, now it's samurai armor.”
“Then I shall be a SAMURAI knight king!” Arthur lit Excalibur, and indeed, Jumper's handiwork had made his sword bigger. (No homo.)
The battle didn't actually go that great. Arthur was silly but genuinely very strong, and Jumper's minefield helped. Unfortunately, the White Clad had an infiltrator, and while Jumper knew about her, he also knew that no one would believe him – especially not Vulcan.
Still, he slipped an armor plate under the back of Vulcan's shirt (they feel like nothing to the wearer), and when Lisa took him hostage, pushed the button on his bracer to remote detonate it, knocking her throw a wall. Vulcan was less than pleased about either of those things, but he agreed to work with Company 8 afterwards. They weren't able to capture either her or Dr. Giovani, but they were at least able to keep them from getting the key to Amaterasu, which Jumper hid in his secret bolt hole.
