Not everyone can get into Michigan. EMU serves multiple purposes. The primary is to be a four year school for metro Detroit for those who aren't UM material and don't want to go to Wayne State. It's also a place for Michigan students who end up on academic probation to get to their grades up enough to get back into Michigan. There are also students who couldn't get into Michigan right out of high school but want to use a good first year at EMU as proof they should be let into the flagship school.
