Can't speak for earlier but I came around in 2014 and I do distinctly remember that I stopped using /vp/ for a while in 2015 because the board was just /e/ posting. It's what the board settles into in the lull between games.
Not that the overall quality wasn't higher back then, can't argue that. People actually liked the series, so naturally there was more interest in posting here and generally more enthusiasm to go around. Board culture like showderp, mspaint threads, not-questy, etc were active, competitive discussion was alive and well, they were still releasing spinoffs so you had that to talk about too
These days there's not a lot to be excited for, so there's not much of a reason to stick around. Leaves you with only the most ultra of autists to populate the board.
I still root for /vp/ in 4cc though. It's still the homeboard in my heart
