Despite the name meaning "terrible lizard" they aren't lizards at all. They have almost no relation to lizards whatsoever. They are reptiles, and dinosaurs are a subset of reptiles, and birds are a subset of dinosaurs.

You can certainly make the case that not all animals that we categorize as dinosaurs were bird-like reptiles (e.g. triceratops, stegosaurus). But T-Rex was definitely bird-like. It's obvious just from looking at the skeleton what it was.

I don't care that you think pic related doesn't look as cool or intimidating, it's just a more sensible explanation.
