It never was beyond the most surface level Dragonball shit. Otaku culture was driven by actual Japanese music (not nu-metal) like visual kei. It's only in recent times that anime online culture has shifted from otaku-culture to just slapping surface level anime aesthetic over other shit and calling it a day.
