This is actually part of a concept for a Super Mario TTRPG adventure I'm mapping out(System: https://1d6chan.miraheze.org/wiki/Super_Mario_RPG)
Gary Gygax's undisputed Masterpiece of a module, the Temple of Elemental Evil, ported to SMRPG. Thinkg how Fistful of Dollars was an adaptation of Yojimbo. Or how Kurosawa did an adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth into a feudal Japanese setting
So the main backstory in the World of Greyhawk original is that 10 years prior to the module taking place: the Temple of Elemental Evil, which worshiped the destructive powers of the four elements as well as the demoness Zuggtmoy, queen of rot, set up outside of the village of Hommlet and began causing chaos throughout the viscounty of Verbobonc. Which is a province of the Archclericy of Veluna. Veluna called upon it's allies, the Kingdom of Furyondy and the City-State of Highfolk to defeat the Temple. Led by the forces of Prince Thrommel IV of Furyondy, they defeated the Temples forces and imprisoned Zuggtmoy in the Temple, in a battle which is now called the battle of Emrity Meadow.
The Mario conversion will be set far in the future of the Mario World.
Furyondy - Mushroom Kingdom
Veluna - Beanbean Kingdom
Highfolk - Numbus land
Thrommel - Mario and Peach's OC son(Both of them will also be fairly old, say around their 50s or 60s)
Zuggtmoy - Shadow Queen
Hommlet will be a small town in the Beanbean kingdom.
In both scenarios, the module starts about 10 years afterward the events of the Battle of Emrity Meadow and the adventurers arrive in Hommlet, where bandit attacks have been taking place. The church of St. Cuthbert/Eldstar convinces them to go investigate a nearby Moathouse which was once an outpost for Temple forces.
