I feel that the synchronicity game is a good start on how you can do it-have a summoner do it and the extra exploration abilities can be from ‘demons’ you recruit after each boss battle. Something like aria with specific load out of souls, or even Bloodstained where you need a combination of souls to do things. I can definitely see a fun niche with it.
