I've always liked how DOOM's gameplay uses weapon specialization and enemy variety to create novel challenges and scenarios. Figuring out what weapons and tactics work best against various strange and alien enemies with widely different behavior and weaknesses is cool. It's like a puzzle game and I love that. There's things DOOM can do with its setting that just can't be done in COD or Goldeneye or any other grounded FPS game.
Does Dark Ages still have those elements? I was a little hesitant with the more open level design. I also got a weird vibe from some of the footage like... the game is "safe masculine". Like everyone is musclebound and huge and dangerous and all the women are ugly and treated with deference because they are queens. It just seems like typical modern gay shit while wearing a marketing department's idea of "cool manly stuff".
I'm here to kill demons and respect women!!
