>>716246830Because the market for Doom games is actually kind of niche. It's way too frenetic and demanding for most people. A lot of normies tried out Doom 2016 only as a curiosity but didn't really become invested in the franchise. Doom Eternal probably would have sold below 2016 if not for having the best possible market timing in the history of video games (released literally right when covid lockdowns began).
Because Eternal had such a lucky release window, it got a bunch of people to play the game who normally wouldn't have and that's why it was so polarizing despite being a fantastic game. Dark Ages was an attempt to respond to criticisms of Eternal and create a game that would have broad appeal. Unfortunately, normies still weren't interested in a tactically demanding, twitchy FPS with metal aesthetics. And Eternal fans were pissed that it slowed the game down causing it to get poor word of mouth.
It's a real shame because Dark Ages is still one of the best shooters I've ever played.
>mech levelsThe combat model is simple but IMO they're cool enough set pieces to get away with it.
>cutscenesI'll admit it's weird that a Doom game tries to tell a coherent story, but it's an overblown concern. It's still less of a movie game than even something like Halo.
>no Mick Gordonoverblown
>no glory killsliterally an improvement
>dragon levelsYeah, this is valid. They kind of suck.
>$80>DEIThese are mostly excuses by closet normies who don't want to admit they're intimidated by the gameplay and were looking for any excuse to avoid it.
