The problem is, how do you write a satisfying romance in a game where the protagonist is, by necessity, a blank slate? You cannot have the kind of interactions you need to have to make a romance satisfying with that as a base, which is why romances in CRPGs have never evolved beyond their initial form in BG2. If you want actually decent romance content, play JRPGs, where the protagonist has an actual identity and therefore can have decent romances written for them.
