Then Naruto had a sissy panic attack when people wanted Sasuke dead for all the terrible things he's done.
The series will always be tarnished because of it.
Once Jariya dies and Naruto "defeats" Pain, that's a good time to end the series, everything after that is unmitigated trash.
Sasuke could have raped, tortured, killed and eaten a thousand children and Naruto would still try to protect him from his consequences while having a panic attack over the fact that people want vengeance.
Naruto has one of the most unsatisfying final series of arcs of anything I've ever seen.
