If you worry about your genetic material then adopting kids is probably the worst choice, since you'll typically end up with the kids of addicts or criminals. It is of course not a given that they also turn into addicts and criminals, but the likelihood of that happening is elevated, so unless you have come to terms with that possibility it could be rather disheartening.

That being said, the types of people who are actually reproducing are not the cream of the crop either, so regardless of how dysfunctional you think you are, there are probably people out there who are much less functional or outright detrimental to society who are still having children (some of whom end up for adoption).
