I bought the starting packs and was really (un)lucky with all the free carat the game threw at me.
I wanted Opera at 5 stars but the game only gave me Spe, Teio and Rice ... so I got them to 4* naturally and then spend all my goddess statues on opera before realizing "Oh wait these are hard to come by."

As like cards? I give them all a try to see what works and what doesn't, but as you can see, last weeks careers worked perfectly fine but now I just keep crashing and burning and I'm also no longer spending my alarm clocks on shit runs that are not really worth it, like all those winning ticket ones.
I do the friendship year, run optional G1 races at 0 energy basically to get extra skill points to optimize training / energy usage but it never feels like its enough stats - ever.
I don't think any of my Umas ever been a 1st favourite in any of the three URA races and it just comes down to WIT checks on their skills.

Maybe I should stop buying the unique skills right of the bat...
