I see where you're coming from for sure. It's a downside to the rule that it really only plays around objectives and is thus easy to predict, but I'd much prefer interactions like this where my opponent considers staying off of an objective, possibly losing points because of it, to keep an important unit alive. To me that's just more strategy for both of us and that's a big reason why I'm here. Hell, who's to say that during my turn I don't switch to the defensive state, go onto the objective myself (now that it's not contested by his death star), and then get the +1 to hit anyway?
To me, when the alternative is that I have to throw away a good chunk of my army for minimal benefits, I much prefer this.
