Honestly, NO one liked this when the movie first came out. There was a very visceral yet quiet, uncomfortable sort of revulsion in the theater when the cool cyberpunk saga suddenly took a stinky-buttrave turn. There were many other ways the Wachowski Brothers could have shown "This Is Humanity Bro," but by that point they were already getting their skulls fucked in by Hollywood deviance.
