You missed the part where they double down and try to take you to court regardless. My dad received a rental car with a "minor scratch" on the side. It was noted by the company and he took picture just in case. He later got a bill through claiming there was a "major scratch" on the side of the car. They tried claiming my dad had scratched the car exactly on the same spot as the previous scratch. Legal action was threatened if my dad didn't pay immediately, which of course he refused. It went to court but they never showed up so they instantly lost. Never rent a car they're extortionists.
