It's officially confirmed Pauline is 13 year old who dreams to be a singer. So all the theories about her being magically turned into a kid are wrong, she is a kid. It clearly is a prequel to modern Mario stuff (aka Odyssey), but if they are considering the arcade in this storyline is unknow, so all the Cranky kidnapping and current DK being the grandson are moot points at the moment. I imagine they're just making a new storyline without caring about baggage. Remember they removed 7 kids from Bowser before and gave him a new one. This could be a start of something similar.
