It's funny, this reminds me of an argument that came up in CAD class when someone from the manufacturing industry did a guest lecture. It was a small class, so there was a Q&A and some guy who was doing applied physics objected to the speaker implying that such classes are academic when you actually begin material simulations and prototyping.
