I honestly don't have an answer right now. In the absence of "clear" supernatural evidence the concept of demonic influence becomes so vague as to be almost meaningless. Meanwhile supposed cases of direct demonic possession always seem to happen under conditions where social pressure and mental illness can never be ruled out.
