legal terms have such interesting origins. for example the origin of the term "held in contempt" comes from the fact that in old english monarchies, the purpose of a judge was to speak and act for the king. and so by disrespecting the judge/court, it was essentially the same as being contemptuous (low level treason) against your own king. neat!
